- Goals
- promotion of the knowledge of Ukrainian in the society;
- improvement of the official language’s prestige among the youth; and
- promotion of respect for the Ukrainian culture and traditions.
- Problem
- The young generation is not only the future of Ukraine, but also our present day, which brings the spirit of innovations and changes.During the years of independence, our country has undergone transformations affecting the social, political, and cultural areas, as well as the general level of education.
- An important indicator of a country’s competitive position is the UN Human Development Index.
- In 2015, Ukraine ranked 81th out of 188 countries by the development level, three steps lower than in 2014.
- Therefore, education requires special attention and support today.
- At the same time, the independence, culture, and welfare of the state significantly depend on the linguistic situation in the country.
- Decision
- For the purpose of development of education programs in Ukraine and popularization of the Ukrainian language, the Obolon Corporation joined the supporters of P. Yatsyk International Contest of Ukrainian Speakers in 2005.
- Each year, the linguistic marathon has over 5 million participants among students and representatives of the Ukrainian Diaspora.
- The contest was launched in 2001 by a Ukrainian-born Canadian philanthropist Petro Yatsyk, supported by the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine and the Ukrainian Philanthropists League.
- For 10 years, Obolon has been providing financial assistance for the contest and establishing its own prizes for proficient speakers of Ukrainian.
Resulit
Since the first Petro Yatsyk Ukrainian Speakers Contest, the scale of the project and geographical distribution of participants have significantly expanded.
Today, the educational event is attended by young people from 25 countries.The project invite people aged 9 to 21. The winners of the linguistic marathon receive encouragement prizes of UAH 3,000 to 6,000, depending on the age group.
Since its creation, the contest has received support from the highest government agencies and acquired the official status of a national event for improveming the knowledge of Ukrainian, promoting comprehensive development and functioning of the Ukrainian language in all spheres of the social life.
